Iron Lacework and Wooden Ceilings

Many houses in Wedderburn are over 150 years old. Whilst this is not very old by European standards, it is for a young country such as Australia. The decorative lace on the Verandah of this house is made of Cast iron. Modern reproductions of this house style use injection moulded plastic, but this is the real thing. The Baltic Pine ceiling is typical of the period.

The Korong Dairy

The old dairy in Ridge Street has been owned by the same local family for many years and was operational until around 5 years ago. Milk was delivered locally and as far afield as Boort, 40Km away. Nowadays the milk comes from one of the large national dairies which is a shame.

I cannot believe the change in the weather this week. Last Sunday the temerature got to 39.8C in Wedderburn, today it was 20. I even lit the heater this morning, the overnight temp was 9.1C and the house was chilly. Crazy Aussie weather...

The nerve scentre of the town, Wedderburn PO is a family business. Not only is it the PO, it also serves as the town's bank and sells a mind-bending range of office supplies, collectibles, crafts and toys. Here we see Shazza (Wife of Dazza) serving Tina. The Charlton "REX"

Not far from Wedderburn is the wheat town of Charlton. The Rex Cinema in Charlton is a treasure. It was built in 1938 and is almost original. The only change made since then was in the 1950s with the removal of some seats and installation of a larger screen and new equipment to allow projection of Cinemascope pictures. The Rex has a rich history and you can read it on the website.

First rain for about 4 months or more... It wasn't much, only a millimetre or so, but the garden said "Aaaaahhhhh...."

Ok, here's our other "Interesting" street name. This is absolutely genuine, not a hoax. Now while Teddy Bear Lane was named after a long time resident of the town Titwobble Lane was not. Well... not quite. The story goes that years ago when this particular part of town was being subdivided, the Shire Engineer was driving down this particular bit of (Un-Named back then) road, doing the survey. The road was very rutted and pot-holed and the Engineer had his wife in the truck. Apparently she said something like "God, this road is so bad it makes my Tits Wobble..." Thus it came to pass that the Engineer named the road in honour of his darling wife. True story? I don't know but how on earth else would a street have got a name like that? Now if the sign for Teddy Bear Lane is frequently stolen, you can imagine how often this one disappears!

Rails to Nowhere...

30 years ago this branch line ran from Wedderburn Junction to Wedderburn. The Trains carried general freight and wheat, terminating at the town's wheat silo. 20 years before that in the 1950s there was a busy passenger service, especially on Football days when special trains would be run to wherever the the game was being played. Now the tracks are gone and the only thing that whistles along here is the wind...

There are a couple of really interesting street names in Wedderburn. This one one is named after a local resident. The other (Which I will post at a later date) is hopefully not. Problem is.... People keep stealing the signs! The local Council has now resorted to putting the sign on 2 re-inforced posts, but they still go missing frequently.

The Undulating area in the middle distance are "Diggings" from previous efforts to find Gold. Maybe up to 150 years ago. Old diggings can sometimes still yield Gold as time and weather erosion change the Landscape.
